OVERVIEW

The iSpeak Contest is jointly run by inlingua School of Languages and the International Scholastic Trust Limited. inlingua School of Languages is part of a network of language schools with over 300 centres in over 30 countries.  

The purpose of the iSpeak contest is to help students speak English better and to encourage a rising global standard of English excellence, inspire young leaders and promote international friendship. In the process, students will improve their creative thinking, their presentation and  teamwork skills in addition to being better equipped to transition into the global workplace. Contest format

Eligibility
The Contest is opened to candidates 9 to 16 years old from any country. 
The contest starts at the local level with a video recorded speech and progresses into the global level with live speeches. 
A summary of the format is given below:   

International Junior Honor Society, Scholarships
Candidates who have won 2 or more significant awards
- either Gold medal at Local iSpeak or Gold or Silver medal at Global iSpeak
- can be eligible for the :
a)   International Junior Honor Society (IJHS); and/or
b)   Young achievers Leadership Academy (YALA) scholarships.

General Terms of Participation


Candidates and parents/guardians, upon registering for the contest, agree to the terms and conditions of the contest which are given below.

Personal Data
All personal data collected by the Organiser (inlingua SG or IST) in connection with the Contest will be processed by the Organiser within and outside Singapore as part of qualifying candidates or for marketing purposes and subject to inlingua’s Privacy Policy (http://www.inlingua.edu.sg/student-info/policies-and-regulations/privacy-policy). Note that the Organiser may share candidates’ personal data with its Agents both within and outside Singapore. 

The Organiser and its Agents reserve the right to request proof of identity and stated address (to the satisfaction of the Organiser and/or Agents) before issuing any prize for either the Local Contest or the Global Contest.

Intellectual Property
By registering for the Contest, candidates understand that the Organiser and/or its Agents can use a candidate’s name, portrait, picture, image, speech or other information in any media type for marketing and/or publicity purposes.

Limitation of liability
The candidates and their parents/guardians agree not to hold the Organiser and/or its appointed staff/agents liable for any illness, injury, death, loss, litigation, claim, expense, tax due or damage sustained directly or indirectly, from :

• Candidates’ involvement in the contest and/or the receipt and use of the award or any portion of it; and/or
• Any incorrect, inaccurate or incomplete information communicated in connection with this Contest; and/or
• Candidates’ failure to receive the award notification email for whatever reasons; and/or
• Any kind of technical malfunction or failures of any hardware of software such as internet or telephone services, computers, cables, networks, etc; and/or
• Human or electronic errors made in the administration of the contest or the processing of entries.

Modifications of Terms
The Organiser reserves the right to modify the Terms of Participation and/or Contest Rules or to cancel the Contest without giving reasons. Such changes will be announced through emails from the Organisers or via School/Country Coordinators.

Induction into honour society
Candidates who have won a Gold or Silver medal at two separate Global iSpeak events can be:
• Inducted into the International Junior Honour Society (IJHS); and/or
• Awarded the Young achievers Leadership Academy (YALA) scholarships.

Registration for Local iSpeak Contest
• Candidates must register in English at the contest website online between 1st March 2020 to 23rd March 2020, 5pm

Video Recording Requirements
Before registration for the Local iSpeak Contest, candidates should have already recorded a 2-minute video on the topic given for the 2020 local contest: 'The best thing about me'

Videos should meet the following requirements or be disqualified :
• Length of speech to be between 1 to 2 minutes long. Content beyond 2 minutes will not be assessed.
• Every candidate should start their recording with the following introduction (which is not counted in the 2-minute time limit): ‘My name is <<student’s name>> and I am <<student’s age>> years old this year.  I am from <<student’s country>> and am currently studying at <<student’s school name>>.
• Videos should have clear audio with minimal echo, static or other excessive noise
• Recordings should include the entire upper body (waist up) to include the face, gestures and body language of the candidates
• Video images should be stable without shaking
• Videos are not be edited in any way: a single take with no cuts, images, text, or special effects
• Videos must be uploaded before the Local iSpeak registration deadline and remain available for viewing up to 6 months following Local iSpeak registration.

Results Announcement for local contest.
Results for the contest will be announced on the contest website (under Announcements-Local iSpeak Results) on 17 April 2020
Awards will be mailed to participants or School Coordinators 2 to 3 weeks after the results are announced.
The following awards will be given out for the Local iSpeak Contest based on the qualified entries received per country:

Registration for Global iSpeak Contest

• Eligible only to gold or silver medallists from the Local iSpeak Contest of the same year.
• Limited to 20 candidates (10 in the Junior category, 10 in the Senior category) per country
• Registration fee is SGD100 per candidate
• Candidates participate in Singapore at their own cost
• Candidates must register for Global iSpeak by 4 May 2020, 5pm Singapore time

Requirements for Live Speech.

• Every candidate is expected to give an individual and a group speech
• Individual and Group speeches must be done from the designated platform/area without any props or sound effects.
• Candidates can use notes to remind themselves of what to say, though over-reliance may affect their Persuasiveness score.
• Individual speeches should be between 1 to 2 minutes long. Speeches of length less than 1 minute of greater than 2.5 minutes will be disqualified. The candidate will be instructed to stop speaking at the 2.5-minute mark.
• Group speeches should cumulatively be between 3 to 6 minutes. Group speeches of cumulatively less than 3 minutes will result in group disqualification. The group will be instructed to stop speaking at the 6.5-minute mark.
-  The Organiser will pre-assign candidates into teams of 2 – 3 persons to participate in the group speech
-  No swapping of group members is allowed
-  Group members may decide the sequence, order and interactions of members speaking, though unbalanced participation of the members may affect Teamwork scores.

• The Organiser will give appropriate reminders at different times so candidates are aware of how much time they have left to speak:
-  Individual Speech – A reminder will be given at the 1-minute, 1.5-minute and 2-minute marks
-  Group Speech - A reminder will be given at the 3-minute, 5.5-minute and 6-minute marks.

Results Announcement for Global Contest.

• The results for both Individual and Group speeches will be announced during the Award Ceremony which will be held at the end of the day. Results will also be posted subsequently on the contest website (under Announcements-Global iSpeak Results). Recipients of cash awards for the Global iSpeak Contest will be required to acknowledge receipt of award.

• School/Country Coordinators may collect awards on a winner’s behalf if the winner is unable to collect their awards in person during the ceremony.

• The Organiser will not be responsible for awards not collected by winners in person; it is the responsibility of the winners to pick up their awards from the School/Country Coordinator who received the winner’s award on the winner’s behalf.
