Contest format

Eligibility
The Contest is open to candidates 9 – 16 years of age..

The contest starts at the local level with the Local iSpeak Contest.  Only gold and silver medallists from the Local iSpeak Contest of the same year can progress to the Global iSpeak Contest held in Singapore.

International Junior Honor Society, Scholarships
Candidates who have won 2 or more significant awards - either Gold medal at Local iSpeak or Gold or Silver medal at Global iSpeak - can be eligible for the :
a)   International Junior Honor Society (IJHS); and/or
b)   Young achievers Leadership Academy (YALA) scholarships.

General Terms of Participation

Personal Data
All personal data collected by the Organiser (inlingua SG or IST) in connection with the Contest will be processed by the Organiser within and outside Singapore as part of qualifying candidates or for marketing purposes and subject to inlingua’s Privacy Policy (http://www.inlingua.edu.sg/student-info/policies-and-regulations/privacy-policy).  Note that the Organiser may share candidates’ personal data with its Partner Schools, School Coordinators, Country Coordinators etc (collectively known as ‘Agents’) both within and outside Singapore.

The Organiser and its Agents reserve the right to request proof of identity and stated address (to the satisfaction of the Organiser and/or Agents) before issuing any prize for either the Local Contest or the Global Contest.

Intellectual Property
By registering for the Contest, candidates understand that the Organiser and/or its Agents can use a candidate’s name, portrait, picture, image, speech or other information in any media type for marketing and/or publicity purposes.


Modifications of Terms
The Organiser reserves the right to modify the Terms of Participation and/or Contest Rules or to cancel the Contest without giving reasons.  Such changes will be announced in the website.

Benefits for Medallists
Candidates who have won 2 or more significant awards - either Gold medal at Local iSpeak or Gold or Silver medal at Global iSpeak - can be eligible for the :

Judging Criteria

Judging will be done on a few criteria : pronunciation, language skill, vocal variety, body language, relevance and persuasiveness.  For groups, the criteria are relevance, persuasiveness, contribution and interaction.

Local ispeak contest details

Registration for Local iSpeak Contest
• Registration fee is SGD 45 per candidate, to be paid using Flywire*.  You will be guided to Flywire during registration
• Candidates must register online in English at the contest website between 25 March 2019 to 18 April 2019, 5 pm Singapore time
• Duplicate registrations for the same candidate will result in disqualification
• Registration will involve video submission and payment
• Videos date/time-stamped after the registration deadline will be disqualified
• The Organiser has the right to extend or reduce the registration period and this will be announced in the contest website
*Flywire is a payment gateway which allowsyou to securely make payment from overseas, often in your local currency. using various home country payment options such as bank transfer, credit card,e-payments, e-wallets, etc – all with no additional fees.   

Video Recording Requirements
Before registration for the Local iSpeak Contest,candidates should have already recorded a 2-minute video on the 2019 topic for the Local iSpeak Contest : Why my school is the best

Videos should meet the following requirements or be disqualified :
• Videos must be in MP4, WMV, WEBM, FLV or AVI formats
• Length of video to be between 1 to 2 minutes long
• Videos uploaded before the Local iSpeak registration deadline to either Youtube or Tudou video sharing sites only, with published dates easily found
• Videos uploaded must remain available for viewing to viewers outside candidate’s country up to 6 months following Local iSpeak registration deadline
• Every candidate should precede their recording with the following introduction :
‘My name is <<NAME>> and I am <<AGE>> years old this year.  I am from <<COUNTRY>> and am currently studying in the <<SCHOOL NAME>>.  My topic for today is ‘Why my school is the best’
• Videos should have clear audio with minimal echo, static or other excessive noise
• Recordings should include the entire upper body (waist up) to show speech and facial expressions/hand gestures of the candidates
• Video images should be stable, not jerky
• Videos are recorded using single-camera setup
• Videos are not be edited in any way, such as, by adding text, graphics, images, special effects etc

Local iSpeak Results Announcement
The Local iSpeak results will be sent out to participants in the week of 6 May 2019 via the registration email address given.
 
Winners who are coming to the global competition can pick up their medals then. Otherwise awards will be sent out by post at the end of June to the address given during registration.  Note that the Organiser is not responsible for safe delivery of awards.

Registration for Global iSpeak Contest

• The Organisers have selected and will invite participants for the Global iSpeak Contest.  They will be invited in the Local iSpeak Contest results email.  
• Participants interested to participate in the Global iSpeak can then confirm their interest to participate by emailing to j.lee@inlingua.edu.sg  with the : 
         *Name of interested participant(s) for the Global iSpeak Contest
         *Proof of payment of registration fee ie Flywire Payment ID    
• The regular registration fee is SGD 100 but those who register early (first 100 participants) need to pay only SGD 70  
• Last day for registration is 24 May 2019
• For Singapore Schools that need e-invoice, please write to accounts@inlingua.edu.sg   as soon as possible, providing us with the following information : Ministry/Statutory Board, Department, Sub-Business Unit, Attention To
• Candidates participate in Singapore at their own cost.
• Payment must be made via Flywire (please click to get into Flywire).   Note the Payment ID at the end of the transaction     and quote this in your email during registration for the Global iSpeak Contest.

Requirements for Live Speech
• Every candidate is expected to give an individual and a group speech
• Note that the the 2019 topic for the Global iSpeak Contest (Junior Category) is : If I have only 1 wish ....
• The top 3 candidates for the individual speech for each category will have to repeat their individual speeches again at the end of the day as part of the selection for the top prizes
• Individual and Group speeches must be done from the designated platform/area without any props and sound effects
• Candidates can use notes to remind themselves of what to say
• Individual speeches should be between 1 to 2 minutes long.  Speeches of length less than 1 minute of greater than 2.5 minutes will be disqualified.  The candidate will be told to stop speaking at the 2.5-minute mark
• Group speeches should cumulatively be between 3 to 6 minutes. Group speeches of cumulatively less than 3 minutes will result in group disqualification. The group will be told to stop speaking at the 6.5-minute mark
    *The Organiser will pre-assign candidates into teams of 3 - 4 persons to participate in the group speech
     *No swopping of group members is allowed
     *The group can decide on sequence and length of speech for its members
◦ Group members can speak more than once during the group speech if required so long as the entire group speech in within 6 minutes
• The Organiser will give appropriate reminders at different times so candidates are aware of how much time they have left to speak
     *Individual Speech – A reminder will be given at the 1-minute, 1.5 minute and 2-minute marks
     *Group Speech - A reminder will be given at the 3-minute and 5.5-minute and 6-minute marks  

Global iSpeak Results Announcement
The results for both Individual and Group speeches will be announced during the Award Ceremony which will be held at the end of the day.   Results will also be posted subsequently in the contest website  (under Announcements-Global iSpeak Results).  Recipients of cash awards for the Global iSpeak Contest will be required to acknowledge receipt of award.

Candidates should try to collect the award in person during the ceremony, failing which the School/Country Coordinator can collect on his/her behalf.  

The Organiser will not be responsible for awards not collected by winners in person; it is the responsibility of the winners to pick up their awards from the School/Country Coordinator within 1 month after the award ceremony lest they be forfeited.
